Abstract

Nature is a perfectly balanced system consisting of various behavioral patterns of different organisms whose methods and strategies can be used as an inspiration in various fields especially engineering. In the field of architecture, many problems have appeared between building and environment as a result of the building’s inability to adapt to the various environmental conditions around it, such as light, temperature, relative humidity, rainwater, wind, noise, and carbon dioxide. And since the building envelopes represent the interface between the outdoor environment and the indoor occupied spaces, it is found that there is a necessary need for changing the fixed skins of buildings and using different technologies in order to help in adapting to any environmental conditions and to achieve the required thermal comfort for users. Therefore, this research suggests the use of mimicking nature -Biomimicry- as an environmental solution for helping buildings in adapting to the surrounding environment changes, by identifying the harsh external environmental factors and minimizing their harmful impact on the comfort of users and the effectiveness of building performance. The research work uses a comparative analytical approach to study the case of buildings that uses biomimetic adaptation techniques in different climates, where some examples will be discussed and analyzed according to the optimum functions of coastal hot climatic zones. This analyzation results in suggesting adaptation techniques can be used in aim to design building facades that can accommodate the constant changes in the surrounding climate. The research leads to generate a small form of database consists of those techniques to be implemented into buildings facades in a coastal hot city in Egypt ”Al-Alamein’s new city”, to adapt to the environmental challenges surrounding the buildings. In conclusion, these results represent an application of the methodology experiment and are not the final and only solution for achieving the adaptation in facades, thus, results will be collected to be a guideline which is constantly developed and modified for architects in designing adaptive buildings in coastal hot climate in Egypt. Designing adaptive building envelopes with these new conceptual ways will lead to introduce the architecture in Egypt to an innovative stages of buildings environmental response.
