Abstract

Background: Vitamin D is a fat soluable vitamin which is important for
different systems of the human body including endocrine and immune systems,
vasculature, endothelial function and wound healing.
Aim of the work: is to asses the relationship between vitamin D deficiency
and incidence of hypertrophic scar and to determine the effect of vitamin D
replacement therapy on hypertrophic scar width and scale in patients who have
deficiency in vitamin D.
Methods: 30 Patients with vitamin D deficiency < 25ng/ml with hypertrophic
scars were divided into 2 groups each group included 15 patients. First group were
subjected to oral vitamin D replacement (2000 IU) daily for one month and the
second group received placebo (sugary tablets).
Results: Data from 30 subjects suggested that scar improvement occurred
significantly with p value < 0.05 after vitamin D replacement in group (1) and this
was represented by low level of Vancouver score but scar width did not change
after treatment in both study groups.
Conclusion: Vitamin D supplement can be used as an adjuvent treatment for
hypertrophic scars as it reduce vascularity, pliability, pigmentation, and height of
scars with little effect on scar width.
Key words: Vitamin D – hypertrophic scarring.
