Abstract

ABSTRACT
In the last few years, the wide demand of bitumen in spite of the complexity of its production process made the researchers invested in the improvement of bitumen properties by using additives such as polymer-materials or Nano-materials.
The scope of this research is studying the enhancement in rheological properties of modified bitumen by Nano-materials or polymer-materials then, it is concerning with the effect of this additives on Marshall Mix Design and the optimum bitumen content in the asphalt mixture.
In this research, two additive materials were used with different percentages (1,3,5,7, and 9% by weight of bitumen). Materials used were kaolinite nano-clay as a Nano-material and styrene- butadiene-styrene (SBS) as a polymer-material.
Penetration Test, Kinematic Viscosity Test, Softening Point Test, Flash Point Test, and Indirect Tensile Strength were conducted to evaluate the enhancement of modified bitumen properties. Moreover, scanning electron microscope (SEM) was performed on modified bitumen and the effect of additions on the supra-molecular organization of the bituminous binder was also investigated. For all mixtures, Marshall Mix Design was conducted to investigate the effects of additives on the optimum bitumen content. Results were obtained and analyzed.
Results showed that, at temperature of 135°C and up to 150°C kaolinite nano-clay and SBS as modifier agents for bitumen improve its rheological properties. using both kaolinite nano-clay and SBS decrease the penetration while increasing the softening and flash point, on the other hand viscosity values did not change significantly. Using modified bitumen with these agents in asphalt mix design has an effect on almost all of Marshall Asphalt mix design properties except the stability, which has the greatest effect. Also, the research found the mathematical relation between the percentage of kaolinite nano-clay and the bitumen content in the asphalt mix.
