Abstract

Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the impact of having a formative OSCE on the clinical performance in the final main summative OSCE, being measured by the grades, comparing between students who attended the formative OSCE and those who did not attend.
Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted in School of Medicine, New Giza University, Egypt. A total of 228 Year 1 students were enrolled in the study with their data obtained including their formative attendance records, formative grades, final OSCE grades. Data was subjected to quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis.
Results: Attendance of formative OSCEs, resulted in significant higher percentage scores in the module final OSCE as well as the total final OSCE as compared to those who did not attend the formative. The number of the attended formatives was positively associated with better percentage scores for the OSCE grades in general. Formative OSCEs had a positive predictive value of 84.5%-91.3% for passing the summative OSCE. IM (Introductory module) had a significant positive weak correlation with the final IM (Introductory module) OSCE grade and the total final OSCE grade.
Conclusion: Formative OSCEs were associated with better performance in the summative OSCE. Several formative OSCEs should be incorporated throughout the year for better performance of the medical students in their first year.
