Abstract

The etiology of pre-eclampsia (PE) is not yet fully understood, though vitamin D is known to have anti-inflammatory properties and there is evidence of an inverse relationship between dietary calcium intake and the incidence of PE.
So, this study aimed to find out whether maternal serum vitamin D level is a risk factor for preeclampsia & its severity during pregnancy.
This observational comparative case-control study was conducted on 90 pregnant women who were divided into three groups: normotensive pregnant women, women with mild pre-eclampsia, and women with severe pre-eclampsia.
Our study patients’ age was ranged from 18 -35 years with an average of 25.81 ± 4.51 years with no statistical differences between each group. For the gestational age at the time of delivery, there were no statistical differences between each group also.
The present study found no statistical significant difference in maternal parity and BMI between the study groups. There was a statistical significant difference between systolic values and diastolic values when comparing between preeclampsia groups with controls (P˂0.001). There were also a statistically significant difference between proteinuria levels which were significantly higher among preeclampsia groups (p<0.001).
Our study results found no statistically significant correlation was found between the level of maternal vitamin D & blood pressure.
Regarding maternal outcome; there was no significant difference between study groups in parity, while CS delivery was significantly higher among preeclampsia groups in primigravida. MCU admission for more than 2 days
