Abstract

Summary and Conclusion
The present thesis investigates the improvement of pure zinc oxide properties for applying in the removal of a toxic dye via the photocatalysis process under direct sunlight irradiation. The thesis contains three chapters.
Chapter One presented an overview on the crisis of water pollution and shortage, technologies of water treatment, impact of dyes on environment, photocatalysis as one of the most and advanced technology, ZnO as photocatalyst in wastewater remediation, synthesis procedures of ZnO nanoparticles and photodegradation of Methylene Blue dye by ZnO before and after modification with metals and nonmetals. An additional part about objectives of this study was mentioned. Accordingly, the metal and non-metal doping technology as an eco-friendly and easy process to enhance the photocatalytic properties of ZnO was performed.
Chapter Two threw light on preparation conditions of pure ZnO and their doped samples. Additionally, this part included some of the conventional instruments which utilized for characterization of the obtained samples. Hence, the doping of ZnO with Ag and Ce metals in different proportions (2 and 4%) for preparing mono- and bi-dopants through a sol-gel procedure and then the calcination at 500oC for 2h in a muffle furnace was employed. Also, the doping of ZnO with non-metallic elements such as C and N using urea through the same method at different weight ratios of urea (5 – 40 wt%) followed by calcination at 500oC for 2h in air to obtain 5-40%N/ZnO, or under N2 gas following to obtain 5-40% C-N/ZnO was successfully achieved.
