Abstract

Chronic kidney disease is defined based on the presence of either kidney damage or decreased kidney function for three or more months, irrespective of cause. Hemodialysis is the most popular form of renal replacement therapy. The adequacy of hemodialysis refers to how well toxins and waste products are removed from the patient’s blood and has a major impact on their well-being. Dialysis delivery should be adequate to improve adequacy of life and to prolong survival. Dialysis dose and adequacy is clinically quantified by Kt/Vurea, an index representing urea clearance throughout a dialysis session that is proportional to total body water. The laboratory criteria used to define iron deficiency and provide indication for treatment are different in CKD compared to normal renal function. In CKD, absolute iron deficiency is likely to be present when the transferrin saturation (TSAT) is ≤20% and the serum ferritin concentration is ≤200 ng/mL among patients undergoing hemodialysis. By comparison, with normal kidney function, iron deficiency anemia is typically defined as serum ferritin concentrations <30 ng/mL. The aim of ur study was to evaluate the relation between adequacy of hemodialysis and Iron parameters among patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. This cross-sectional study included 90 patients of CKD under regular hemodialysis more than 3 month from the inwards and outpatient clinic of Internal Medicine Department Tanta University Hospital. The study duration was start from June 2021 to November 2021.
