Abstract

The major issues with chemotherapeutic agents are the long-term side effects and toxicity of normal cells. Thus, the development of novel effective drugs or pharmacologic combinations is important. The chemoprevention is an alternate strategy that involves synthetic, semi-synthetic, or natural compounds to suppress carcinogenesis, particularly in individuals at a high risk of malignant tumours(Mogharbel et al., 2023).
Several studies have recently demonstrated that phenols/polyphenols derived from plants can benefit the health since they are able to treat infections, oxidative damage, inflammations, diabetes, tumours, neurodegenerative and heart diseases. Furthermore, these compounds are ubiquitous, cheap, convenient, generally accepted and have long half-life, thus they have gained a great interest in diet-based therapies. They are beneficial to human health as they have elevated concentrations of antioxidant components. Such compounds can alter the signaling of carcinogenesis and eventually inhibiting it through downregulating angiogenic growth factors. Moreover, many studies have showed that the incorporation of natural phenols/polyphenols into chemotherapeutic agents could increase their anti-cancer effects, reduce adverse effects, and eradicate chemo- resistant or radio-resistant tumour cells.(Torić et al., 2019)
