Abstract Ethnobotanical practices have been applied by many people to treat health-related problems. These people have their customs and traditions regarding therapeutically important plants. Ethnobotanical data help evaluate the medicinal characteristics of plants based on information gathered related to the traditional use. Plant-based investigations also verify the transmission of traditional information. It has been discovered that about 5,000 various plant species from angiosperms are universally used in conventional medicine against many diseases. Profiling such medicinally beneficial plants is crucial for their utilization in the pharmaceutical industry. The “omics” technologies have conveyed novel insights into all the aspects of life sciences, comprising plant science. Metabolic profiling of plants allows the identification of characteristic chemical constituents and further correlation to biological activity. Genetic profiling is a rapidly emerging method for identification and differentiation of various plant species. Creating metabolic and genetic profiles of plants facilitate their authentication and quality control. Genus Artemisia has a long history in traditional medicine and many of its species still have unexplored potential. Hence, profiling Artemisia species has garnered research interest during the last few decades. |
