Abstract

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, causing inflammation and damage to the myelin sheath that surrounds nerve fibers. This damage can result in a range of symptoms, including muscle weakness, fatigue, balance issues, and cognitive impairment. The present study aimed to: Estimate the expression of circulating miR-150 and miR-155 in serum of MS and NMO patients. Measure the serum levels of NFL and YKL-40 of MS and NMO patients. Investigate the correlation of the measured biomarkers with different MS phenotypes, disability status and the patientʹs demographic data among MS and NMO patients. Evaluate the utility of miR-150, miR-155, NFL and YKL-40 as diagnostic or prognostic markers. The study is a case-control study conducted between January 2021 and March 2022 at the Neurology Department of Assiut University Hospital. The study included 70 subjects, comprising 30 multiple sclerosis patients, 10 neuromyelitis optica patients, and 30 age and sex-matched healthy controls, MS patients were further divided into RRMS and SPMS.
