Abstract

Tobacco consumption continues to be the leading preventable cause of death in the world. The tobacco epidemic is still expanding, especially in less developed countries. The only way to combat tobacco epidemic is by implementing a comprehensive, continuous, sustainable and adequately funded tobacco control strategy. Health professionals have a prominent role to play in tobacco control, they have the trust of the population, the media and opinion leaders, and their voices are heard across a vast range of social, economic and political arenas. Not all health professionals need to become smoking cessation specialists, but everyone has a duty to implement the minimal intervention steps of asking about tobacco use, assessing willingness to quit, advising quitting and further referring and arranging for cessation services. Researches has demonstrated that interventions that use multiple providers are very effective, and that all health care professionals can have an impact in assisting with cessation.
