Abstract

Congenital hearing impairment is one of common birth defects in neonates. Hearing abnormalities can affect speech and language development, and other social cognitive functions in childhood, resulting in long-term learning difficulties and permanent disability. Early identification and rehabilitation of congenital hearing loss is important in functional outcome.
The aim of this study was to assess the incidence, type, degree and possible causes of hearing loss of neonates referred to the Audiology Unit of El Mahalla General hospital from the primary healthcare centers.
This study was a cross sectional study conducted on 75 neonates who got ”Refer” result from the neonatal hearing screening which was done twice by ”TEOAE” or ”DPOAE” at primary health care centers
All neonates have been subjected to full history taking, immittancemetry (tympanometry 226 Hz & ipsilateral acoustic reflexes) and transient evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAEs) test. Acoustic reflex thresholds were elicited ipsilaterally using pure tones of 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz. In case of presence of risk factors of HL (JCIH, 2019) or refer by (TEOAEs), ABR(click, toneburst (500 Hz) & cochlear microphonic) was done.
