Abstract

Inflammatory bowel disease is an idiopathic disease characterized by severe inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. It encompasses two major clinical entities: ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Although, the exact etiology in Inflammatory bowel disease remains uncertain, it is generally caused by an immunological imbalance in the intestinal mucosa, which is often mediated by an inappropriate and sustained inflammatory response against environmental factors and commensal pathogens in genetically susceptible hosts. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease can develop various extra-intestinal manifestations, which can lead to high morbidity, and occasionally, life-threatening consequences. Cardiac manifestations in inflammatory bowel disease can be defined by inflammatory bowel disease -associated disorders that affect the cardiovascular system. Cardiac manifestations in patients with inflammatory bowel disease mostly occur as immune-related consequences and include the following: pericarditis, myocarditis, left ventricle impairment, arrhythmias and conduction disorders, infective endocarditis and valvulopathy.
