Abstract NAFLD has become a global health concern due to its rising prevalence. It is primarily caused by an imbalance between fat accumulation and breakdown in the liver, influenced by factors such as obesity, IR, metabolic syndrome, dietary factors, sedentary lifestyle, and genetic predisposition. NAFLD is not limited to liver pathology, as it exerts systemic effects on extrahepatic tissues, including the kidney and heart. To treat NAFLD, several therapies can be used, such as drugs to lower lipid levels and antioxidants to protect liver cells. Choline, an essential nutrient, is vital for fat metabolism and maintaining cell membrane integrity. Choline deficiency disrupts fat transport and leads to TAG accumulation in the liver. It also impairs mitochondrial function and increases oxidative damage. Choline supplementation shows promise in reducing liver fat and inflammation in NAFLD. Vitamin E, a fat-soluble antioxidant, protects cells from oxidative damage and enhancing antioxidant enzyme activity. Vitamin E supplementation improves liver histology and biochemical markers in NAFLD by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. |
