Abstract Lung cancer is one of the most common cancersand represents the main cause of cancer mortality worldwide in both men and women. NSCLCs representing about 85% of lung cancer, are generally subcategorized into adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma. 18F-FDG PET/CT scanning is now a standard procedure for staging patients with NSCLC and therefore is implemented in various international guidelines for presurgical evaluation. Volume-based PET parameters MTV and TLG offer a thorough assessment of the tumor’s biological aggressiveness and viable tumor burden. These parameters can be assessed in all metabolically active metastatic lesions throughout the body, in addition to the primary tumors. It was shown that these volume-based metrics are significant prognostic determinants regardless of the method, even if standardised methodologies for their measurements are still necessary. They may, in fact, reveal distinct risk categories within the same TNM stage, offering a valuable tool for categorizing patients within the same stage and enabling risk-adapted treatment for specific patients. |
