Abstract Moringa olefeira has been recently used in multiple medicinal fields due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Hence, it has been considered as an intriguing agent that could help osteogenesis not only because of its properties, but also because of its low cost, biocompatibility and wide availability. Objectives: The aim of this study was to histologically and histomorphometrically assess the effect of combining Moringa oleifera leaf extract and Beta Tricalcium Phosphate on the healing of experimentally created critical-sized bone defects in the mandibles of rabbits. Materials and Methods: Eighteen rabbits were included in this study and divided randomly into 3 groups: group A (negative control group) comprises 6 empty critical-sized intraosseous defects, group B (positive control group) comprises 6 intraosseous critical-sized defects filled with Beta Tricalcium Phosphate mixed with saline, and group C (test group): comprises 6 critical-sized intraosseous defects filled with Beta Tricalcium Phosphate mixed with Moringa oleifera leaf extract. Samples were collected from the surgical sites of the experimental defects at 4&8 weeks for histological and histomorphometric assessment. Results: There was a substantial qualitative difference in the vascularity of bone and thicknesses of bony trabeculae between the test group and the control groups. There was also a significant difference in the percentage of bone formed in relation to the surface area of the defect as well as in the number of osteoblasts between the test group and the control groups after 4 and 8 weeks. |
