Abstract

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a preventable disease that can be prevented through multidisciplinary team which include obstetricians, neonatologists, ophthalmologists, parents and neonatal nurses. Neonatal nurses are the corner stone of care in neonatal intensive care unit. So, their knowledge and clinical skills are essential in providing best practices of care with high quality for prevention of ROP. A novel nursing strategies for neonatal care include POINTS of care for neonates that consists of six abbreviations letters. Each letter is abbreviation for specific practice which consists of Pain control, Oxygen management, Infection control, Nutrition, Temperature control and Supportive developmental care Sabri et al., (2022). Aim: The current study aimed to assess nurses’ performance regarding POINTS of care for prevention of retinopathy of premature neonates. Study design: A descriptive research design was used in the present study. Setting: The study was conducted at Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) of Tanta Main University Hospital and International Teaching Hospital. Subjects: All nurses (120) in the previously mentioned settings were involved in the current study. The participant nurses were distributed as 70 nurses from Tanta Main University Hospital and 50 nurses from International Teaching Hospital. The study sample also, involved 120 premature neonates whose gestational age less than 37 weeks and low birth weight.
