Abstract

In the present study the efficacy of Er:YAG versus Er,Cr:YSGG lasers for debonding metallic brackets versus conventional debonding method and their effect on the adhesive remnant index (ARI) and enamel surface damage were evaluated. Sixty metallic brackets were bonded to sixty upper first premolars extracted for orthodontic treatment. The teeth were divided into three main groups. The 1st group was the control group with no laser application. The other two groups were considered as test group and were irradiated with different lasers. group 1: consisted of 12 premolars that were debonded with a debonding plier group 2: consisted of 24 premolars that were divided equally into two subgroups and were irradiated by Er:YAG  group 2A: the samples were irradiated by Er:YAG at 6 W  group 2B: the samples were irradiated by Er:YAG at 7W group 3: consisted of 24 premolars that were divided equally into two subgroups and were irradiated by Er,Cr:YSGG.  group 3A: the samples were irradiated by Er,Cr:YSGG at 6 W  group 3B: the samples were irradiated by Er,Cr:YSGG at 7 W
The samples were evaluated by stereomicroscope to assess the ARI score and enamel damage after debonding at a magnification 30x and 60x respectively.
from the current study, the following was concluded:  Both Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG could effectively debond metal brackets without any additional forces with the used parameters.  Er,Cr;YSGG laser (6W and 7W) decrease the risk of enamel damage compared to the Er:YAG laser and the conventional method for debonding.  Er:YAG laser at 7 W can minimize the chair-side time for finishing after debonding in comparison to Er,Cr;YSGG laser.
