Abstract
Renal artery embolization has proved to be a very useful technique that is extremely underutilized in the field of renal tumor surgery. This underutilization may be partly due to lack of prospective studies which can outline benefits, precautions and proper definitions of success.
Renal artery embolization allows enhancement of surgical steps, preservation of renal function by avoiding non indicated ischemia. It may play a role in long term cancer control but a lot of studies are mandatory to prove this.
One of the limitations of our study is the small number of cases we could obtain to enroll in our study. Such appealing results need a higher number of cases to ensure safety of such technique. Also longer periods of follow up are necessary to ensure cancer-free survival.
Renal artery embolization techniques have been remarkably improved with concomitant revolution in imaging modalities. Such improvement is aimed to represent the corner stone in expanding the inclusion criteria of similar future studies. This will accommodate higher number of patients with tumors previously known to be surgically challenging.
Treatment of RCC in the setting of localized disease amenable for nephron-sparing surgery cannot be any more with radical intents. Tumors with high difficulty score depending on its site should not be the only reason for radical surgery.
