Abstract

Corona virus disease 2019 is an infectious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The disease rapidly spread throughout the world and was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 12, 2020.
In the present retrospective case comparion study we aimed to study the epidemiology of AKI in diabetic patients admitted by COVID-19 infection, and weather AKI affect those patients more or not among patients admitted by COVID-19 infection at the Emergency Room, Internal Medicine Department,Assiut University Hospital in the period from the first of March 2021 up to the end of March 2022. The study included 90 COVID-19 infected patients (38 were non diabetic and 52 cases with diabetes mellitus).
1. Data has been collected by semi structured questionnaires which has been filled by the researcher herself which include the followings:
• Socio demographic data (name, age, sex, body weight and height, job, marital status, number of children, educational level and residence etc).
• Main presenting symptoms
• History of hypertension, chronic kidney disease, ect.
• Results of clinical examinations (including general and local examination of those patients), in addition to the with vital signs results.
2. The following investigations have been recorded:
• Blood urea, serum creatinine, electrolytes, urine analysis, CRP, CBC, COVID PCR, ferritin and serology(HCV,HBV and HIV).
3. Imaging study as CT chest.
4. Other investigations have been done according to the case.
- Dialysis sessions was done for certain indications(congestion, uncorrected acidosis and uremic encephalopathy), times, types and ultrafiltration.
- On discharge: the outcome of the patients were reported as follow:
 Improved: improved clinically from symptoms as dyspnea,vomiting, fever and other manifestation and laboratory data.
 CKD on dialysis or not
CKD which mean decrease chemistry <50%and didn’t need dialysis.
Died.
