Abstract

Tuberculosis is an infectious -bacterial disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) that primarily affects the lungs. Extrapulmonary tuberculosis may occur as an initial infection or a subsequent, widespread infection. Lymphadenopathy is the primary location for extrapulmonary tuberculosis, and tuberculous pleurisy is the second most common site.
The aim of the work was to compare medical thoracoscopic and US-guided transthoracic pleural biopsies regarding efficacy, safety, and complications in the diagnosis of TPE.
The study included 30 patients with suspected tuberculous effusions. All the patients were randomized into two groups. group A underwent medical thoracoscopy, while group B underwent ultrasound-guided transthoracic needle biopsies. Biopsy specimens were subjected to histopathological and microbiological analysis. Patients in group B with inconclusive results underwent subsequent medical thoracoscopy.
