Abstract

Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit. It commonly occurs at puberty but is also observed in adults. Its pathophysiology involves four factors, hyperseborrhoea, abnormal follicular keratinization, Propionibacterium acnes proliferation and inflammation in the pilosebaceous unit Severity of acne vulgaris is associated with insulin resistance, increased risk of metabolic syndrome. Irisin is a recently discoveredmyokine that plays an important role in fat metabolism through the browningof white adipose tissue. This myokine is usually secreted after exercise byimproving energy balance and has shown great potential as a possibletreatment for some metabolic diseases such as obesity, insulin resistance, andinflammation. The aim of the present study is evaluation of the role of insulinresistance and serum Irisin in patients with acne vulgaris to assess their relation and correlation with disease severity.
