Abstract

RRD is a condition that requires immediate medical attention. If left untreated or if surgical intervention is postponed, it can lead to PVR and blindness. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment play a critical role in maintaining visual function.
The gold standard for diagnosis of retinal breaks in RRD is the DFE by indirect ophthalmoscopy lens. However, this method takes a significant amount of time, requires active patient collaboration, an experienced retina specialist, and can be uncomfortable for the patient. So there are new methods of examination that have been used to detect retinal breaks in RRD patients such as color fundus photographic imaging and UWF imaging.
The target of this study is the comparison between the efficacy of DFE by slit lamp biomicroscopy and UWF imaging in detecting Retinal breaks in RRD patients.
The study was conducted as a prospective observational study in AMUH. 100 patients who presented with acute primary RRD were included. All patients had DFE and UWF imaging in the PPG and four gaze-steered images.
The findings of this study validated that UWF imaging is better than DFE in identifying the extent of RRD and the location of retinal breaks. the UWF fundus imaging technique has multiple benefits over DFE such as the acquisition of high-resolution images in a single shot through non dilated pupil, a field of vision extending to (220°) means that 97 percent of the retinal surface is visible. Additionally, the results can be recorded for several purposes.
