Abstract

Since SD can be treated in a variety of ways, the current study compares the effectiveness and safety of microneedling therapy (dermapen) and microneedling therapy combined with topical AA in the treatment of SD.
This study is conducted on 28 female patients. All patients have SD either rubra or alba on different areas of the body.
There were two groups of patients, the first group was treated with microneedling by dermapen device, and the second group was treated by microneedling combined with topical AA in the same session. Four sessions were done with one month interval. Photographs were obtained at baseline, at the beginning of each session and at the end of follow up period (3 months after the last session).
Patients’ striae were clinically assessed by two blinded dermatologist using Quartile grading scale, Manchester Scar Scale (MSS), also patient satisfaction score was reported.
The results of the current study show that the SD significantly improved in the areas treated by the two modalities, and between the two groups, there was no statistically significant difference in the improvement score.
In microneedling group, 1 patient (7.1%) shows excellent improvement, 3 patients (21.4 %) show good improvement, 6 patients (42.9 %) show moderate improvement and 4 patients (28.6 %) show mild improvement .While In microneedling combined with AA group, 3 patients (21.4 %) show excellent improvement, 8 patients (57.1 %) show good improvement ,2 patients (14.3 %) show moderate improvement, and 1 patient (7.1%) shows mild improvement.
Despite improvement, there was no statistically significant difference in the improvement score between the two groups.
In microneedling group, 4 patients (28.6 %) are slightly satisfied, 6 patients (42.9 %) are satisfied and 4 patients (28.6 %) are very satisfied. In microneedling combined with AA group, 3 patients (21.4%) are satisfied, 8 patients (57.1 %) are very satisfied and 3 patients (21.4 %) are extremely satisfied.
The results of this study show that both microneedling using dermapen alone or combined with topical AA are effective, safe, viable therapeutic modalities in the treatment of SD and are widely accessible, low cost, have minimal tolerated side effects, essentially no downtime and are efficient in treating both forms of striae.
Both methods are tolerated regarding side effects except minimal irritation, burning sensation and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation which improve gradually.
