Abstract

This research was laid out during the two seasons of 2016 and 2017 at the Nursery of Ornamental plants, Fac. Agric., Minia Univ. to teste the influence of soil media (clay, sand, and clay/sand, 1:1, v/v), some growth regulators [control, alar at 1500 and 3000 ppm, phloroglucinol Anhydrous (PGA) at 150 and 300 ppm and 4-chlorophenoxy acetic acid (4-CPA) at 150 and 300 ppm] and their interactions on vegetation and root growth characters, flowering productivity and some chemical constituents of Tagetes patula plant.
When compared to other soil media (clay and sandy media) used during both seasons, all vegetative growth characteristics of the Frech marigold, such as plant height, stem diameter, number of branches per plant, root length and areal parts, and root system fresh and dry weights, were significantly increased when the plants were grown in clay/sandy media. In all seasons, the clay/sandy medium produced more flowers than the other two, measured by flower diameter, flower stalk length, number of flowers per plant, and total flower fresh and dried weights. Also, pigments content and antioxidant activity (%) were increased in the same soil media.
Spraying plans with growth regulators significantly increased all previous characters except stem length, weight of fresh and dry areal parts with high concentrations and flower stalk length in both seasons.
The best combination was growing marigold plants in clay/sand media and spray by PGA or 4-CPA each at 300 ppm.
Keywords: Tagetes patula – Alar – PGA – 4 CPA.
