Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Liver cirrhosis is an established risk factor for HCC since 80–90% of HCC occurs on top of cirrhosis. Viral hepatitis is the fundamental risk factor for cirrhosis either due to chronic HBV or HCV infection.Hepatocarcinogenesis is believed to be a multistep process that starts with cirrhosis and progress to dysplastic nodules which can be low-grade dysplastic nodules or high-grade dysplastic nodules ultimately leading to HCC. The differential diagnosis between HGDN and well differentiated HCC is extremely challenging. Histological differentiation by morphology alone is not possible most of the time and a definitive pathological differentiation between the two entities is currently lacking. This study aimed to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of AEG1 and GPC3 in both HCC and precancerous lesions including (cirrhotic nodules and dysplastic nodules). The diagnostic value of AEG1 alone and the double combinations of AEG1 with GPC3 were evaluated.Furthermore, the expression of the two markers in different grades of HCC was assessed |
