Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the motility and patient satisfaction of solid and hollowed ocular prostheses. Double blinded cross over randomized clinical trial included 10 patients referred from outpatient clinic of Ophthalmology Department to outpatient clinic of prosthodontic department Minia University dental Hospital . Each patient received randomly two types of ocular prostheses (hollowed and solid) .Awash out period of two weeks was applicated between the two prostheses. .three evaluators evaluate blindly the motility in horizontal and vertical gaze using custer method . a novel technique is used for fabrication the hollow prostheses. Patient filled questionnaire from 14 question to measure patient satisfaction for each prosthesis . Data collected for each type of prosthesis ,coded and then analyzed statistically to get valid results. Reducing weight of ocular prosthesis through hollowing didn’t influence motility of the prosthesis .there was no significant difference between two groups in horizontal and vertical gaze. The median for motility in vertical movement for sum of the evaluators was 5 mml for solid and hollowed prostheses. The median for motility in horizontal movement for sum of evaluators was 3 mml for solid and hollowed prostheses. Mann-Whitney test is used for non-parametric quantitative data between the two groups and p value is less than 0.05 . so there is non-significant difference between two groups. Although there was no difference in motility , all patients reported that the hollow one was more comfortable . the hollow prosthesis was the preferable one to all patients .so the hollow one was more satisfied to patient than solid one. |
