Abstract

The polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder affecting reproductive age women worldwide. Clinical features of PCOS namely hirsutism, acne, and alopecia originate from high circulating levels of androgens, menstrual irregularities from anovulatory cycles, and obesity is thought to originate from both the underlying Infertility Rate and high androgen levels in these patients . The alarming tribulations associated with the syndrome are past the reproductive axis and these women are at a greater risk of developing the metabolic syndrome at an early age because of Infertility Rate and obesity observed in 30-60% of PCOS patients.
The Family Medicine proposed that quality and outcomes be one of the tenets of the new model of early diagnosis of this condition. To meet this goal, it is important for us to know the current state of practice. This study’s purpose was to better understand family physicians’ practice patterns, knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes regarding the identification and management of PCOS.
In summary, family physicians care for many patients with PCOS, but few systematically ask patients about risk factors. Therefore, it is likely that many high-risk patients remain unrecognized and undiagnosed. When PCOS is diagnosed, many family physicians experience barriers in referral to a specialist. Solutions must address health insurance policy limitations as well as making knowledge and skills for evaluation and treatment more widely available among primary care physicians.
Polycystic ovary syndrome is a common condition. Family physicians must takecare to address all the associated sequelae of the disorder, both reproductive and metabolic. With increased awareness of the potential cardiometabolic consequences of PCOS, specialists can work in conjunction with family medicine providers to improve long-term health outcomes for these patients.
