Abstract

Fever of unknown origin (FUO) was first defined in 1961 by Peters Dorf and Beeson as a temperature greater than 38.3°C on several occasions, for more than 3 weeks’ duration of illness, or failure to reach a diagnosis despite one week of inpatient investigation. Recently the duration of time has been modified to include patients whose illness remains undiagnosed after at least 3 outpatient visits or 3 days in the hospital. To describe the etiology, epidemiological characters, find the relative incidence of different causes of FUO and determine any change in the etiologic pattern of FUO during the duration of the study.
