Abstract

Family Arecaceae (Palmae) includes about 181 genera with around 2600 species that are distributed in tropical and subtropical regions. The genus Latania (Latan palm) belongs to the family Arecaceae and is regional to the Mascarene Islands in the western Indian Ocean. Latania verschaffeltii Lem.its synonymsareCleophora verschaffeltii(Lem.) O.F. Cook,Latania aurea B.S. Williams, and Latania flavescens Pynaert.) is widely used as a beautiful ornamental plant.Leaves are used as thatch, trunks as wood sources, and young seeds are considered edible. Reviewing the available current literature, nothing could be traced concerning botanical, phytochemical and biological studies of Latania verschaffeltii Lem., this prompted us to undertake a pharmacognostical and biological investigation of this plant.
