Abstract

According to the World Health Organization in 2020, bronchial asthma deaths in
Egypt reached 7,104, accounting for 1.32% of total deaths. Egypt was ranked 59th in the world in terms of bronchial asthma deaths. This high mortality can be attributed to potential factors such as underdiagnoses, under treatment and poor adherence to treatment.
Dyspnea is a frightening and debilitating experience that vary in intensity. Acute dyspnea is a frightening experience that reported by more than 15% of patients at hospital admission, 50% of patients seen in the emergency room and up to 50% of critically ill mechanically ventilated patients. It independently predicts hospital death and post-intensive care stress disorders. chronic dyspnea represents a major physical, psychological, and social burden. Given the epidemiology of chronic respiratory diseases, congestive heart failure and neuromuscular disorders (Demoule et al., 2022).So educational module is critical in minimizing bronchial asthma and dyspnea episodes by early identification of triggers that is important in diagnosis and treatment.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of educational module on severity of dyspnea and inhalation therapy adherence among patients with bronchial asthma.
Setting: The study was carried out in chest diseases department of Menoufia University at Shebin El-Kom, Menoufia Governorate, Egypt.
Subjects: A consecutive sample of 80 adult patients with bronchial asthma were assigned into two equal groups, 40 patients for each group.
- Study group (I): patients received the structured educational module along with routine hospital care.
- Control group (II): patients received routine hospital care only, including regular checkups, tests, x-rays and treatment.
Instruments of the study: Four instruments were used for data collection
Instrument I: - Structure interview questionnaire.
Instrument II: - Pressurized MDI Performance Observational Checklist.
Instrument III: - shortness of breath questionnaire.
Instrument IV: - Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS).
The main findings of the present study were
• Educational module had high significant effect in improving the level of practicing inhaler therapy and adherence to inhalation therapy among study group (group I) than control group (group II).
• The educational module had a positive impact on reducing dyspnea episodes and its severity grade in the study group (group I) compared to the control group (group II).
Conclusion It was concluded that the educational module is an effective tool for aiding individuals in enhancing their inhaler therapy practices, adherence to inhalation therapy, and reducing dyspnea episodes and their severity grade by focusing on activities, avoiding triggers, and making lifestyle modifications for patients with bronchial asthma through acquired education and skills demonstrations.
Recommendations Patients with bronchial asthma should receive supervised continuous education and skills demonstrations to enhance their understanding of their condition, its complications, and the significance of consistent care practices. This can improve the generalizability of the results. Replicating the study using a large probability sample drawn from different geographical areas and incorporating seasonal variations can help identify potential differences that contribute to improved management.
