Abstract

Vitiligo is an acquired pigmentary disorder of the skin and mucous
membranes, characterized by circumscribed depigmented macules and patches.
Vitiligo pathogenesis entails an autoimmune response targeting epidermal
melanocytes. Narrow band ultraviolet B therapy is an effective and safe
modality for vitiligo treatment.
➢ Oxidative stress is one of the main contributors to melanocyte cytotoxicity in
the pathogenesis of vitiligo. The dynamic thiol/disulfide ratio is one of
biochemical markers to define oxidative stress and inflammation. Thiols are
compounds that contain sulphur and play an important role in helping the body
defend against reactive oxygen species.
➢ This study aimed to evaluate total thiol/ thiol disulfide ratio in patients with
vitiligo before and after narrow band ultraviolet B therapy compared to healthy
controls. All participants involved in this study provided informed consent.
➢ This study included 66 subjects divided into two groups. group A included 33patients with vitiligo, 14 males and 19 females. group B included 33 healthy
control subjects, 15 males and 18 females. Before starting NB-UVB therapy
sessions, patients underwent history taking and dermatological examination as
well as evaluation of vitiligo severity via VES score, and activity via VIDA
score and clinical signs of activity. Standard photography was taken for each
patient. Blood samples were taken to assess serum level of total thiol and thioldisulfide
before and after NB-UVB therapy using enzyme-linked
immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Finally total thiol / thiol disulfide ratio was
calculated.
