Abstract
The treatment of ankle fractures in patients with diabetes mellitus is considered a challenging clinical dilemma, in spite of this growing patient population, there is no standard protocol for the treatment and decision making of diabetic patients with ankle fractures.
Diabetes has become the most common epidemic with one third of world population being affected, diabetes is known to cause micro-angiopathy, neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy, local osteoporosis and delay soft tissue healing, so ankle fractures in patients with diabetes mellitus is considered as a challenge in terms of delays in fracture healing, difficulties with wound healing, the development of charcot arthropathy and infections, significant controversy exists as to whether diabetic ankle fractures are best treated noninvasively or by ORIF.
The aim of the study to evaluate the outcome of pott’s fractures of the ankle joint in diabetic patients treated with open reduction internal fixation with plate and screws.
Scientific material of this study: This prospective clinical series study involved 30 patients with ankle pott`s fractures coming to the orthopedic out-patient clinic of Zagazig university hospital and El-sahel teaching hospital . The study started in January 2022 and ended at march 2023. All patients were treated by open reduction and internal fixation.
Operative fixation is done through ORIF by plate and screws according to AO principles of periarticular fracture fixation
Follow Up and evaluation of the patients was done by the following program: In the first follow up, all patients reviewedevery 3 days at first 2 weeks to check on the skin condition and peripheral.
