Abstract

The aim of the present study is to Assess the Risk of Dumping Treated Industrial Wastewater on the Ismailia Canal and its Impact on The characteristics of Water and Soil.
Ismailia Canal which is the main source of freshwater for several governorates, cities and villages is exposed to dramatic deterioration in its water quality due to different wastes that discharge into the water body. Although (WQI) Water Quality Index results show that the water quality of the canal is excellent for irrigation usage and good to poor for drinking and aquatic life utilizations according to the selected parameters in the present study, but the canal is obviously polluted by metals for different utilizations along the canal.
So, water samples were collected from different dimensions and directions from Ismailia Canal, and chemical properties of the collected Surface and groundwater were determined the appropriateness of water for irrigation using various parameters like pH, electrical conductivity, sodium absorption ratio, and water quality index were assessed. The results of samples analysis showed that pH values ranged from 7.1 to 8.1, and electrical conductivity values fluctuated between 0.334 and 0.447 mS/cm. Moreover, the sodium adsorption ratio of the water samples ranges between 0.55 and 3.01, while the water quality index showed that all water samples, both surface and groundwater, are excellent for irrigation.
The effect of irrigation with treated wastewater on soil physical, chemical and biological properties was evaluated in this study. Therefore, soil samples were collected from three sites different dimensions and directions of the Ismailia Canal, and the chemical, physical and biological properties of the collected soil samples were determined, and various soil analyzes were performed, such as pH, electrical conductivity, and macro and micro elements. Dehydrogenase activity was determined. Results showed that the use of treated irrigation water led to a slight increase in pH, EC, as well as macro and microelements. In addition, led to a decrease in microbial activity expressed by the dehydrogenase enzymes activity, compared to other sectors.
