Abstract

The present thesis conducts a critical discourse analysis (hereafter CDA) of the political speeches of Donald Trump and Boris Johnson on the Covid-19 from a comparative perspective. It offers a critical discourse analysis of the responses of former United States of America President, Donald Trump and former British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. It compares the extent to which the two leaders have responded not only to their peoples but also to the whole world. The thesis has adopted the tools of CDA to evaluate these responses. The thesis has been motivated to define political discourse, discuss characteristics and classification of political discourse-, and carry out a corpus linguistic analysis of a number of political speeches delivered by Donald Trump and Boris Johnson on COVID 19 crisis. The study seeks to determine the most frequent lexical items, collocations and grammatical patterns used in the speeches of those two mighty leaders. It also seeks to pinpoint the points of similarities and differences between the two leaders in how they have (re)presented this horrendous experience of Covid-19 to their public and what linguistic tools they have used to incorporate their powers and ideologies. The thesis has reached the conclusion that political speeches can play a vital role during times of crises.
