Abstract

Waste tires are a significant and challenging waste problem worldwide due to their long-lasting nature and frequent disposal in landfills. An option for recycling is to use scrap tire rubber as a substitute for aggregate in concrete, producing rubberized concrete (RuC). Even though RuC has a lower compressive strength, which limits its application, it provides superior mechanical properties compared to normal concrete, such as increased ductility and high energy absorption, as well as being a form of sustainable concrete. Accordingly, recent research suggests combining the RuC with the concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) column configuration to compensate for the reduction in its compressive strength and produce a high performance compression element in terms of axial compressive capacity and ductility.
