Abstract Vitiligo is a depigmentary condition of the skin affecting an estimated 1% of the world’s population. NB-UVB phototherapy is an effective widely used modality in treatment of vitiligo. 5-FU is a chemotherapeutic agent used in the treatment of many malignant tumors, and it has been approved for topical use in the treatment of several dermatologic disorders because localized hyperpigmentation occurred as a side effect of 5-FU. Also, PTX is a methylxanthine derivative that is trialed for a variety of dermatological conditions as monotherapy or adjuvant therapy which has several physiological effects at the cellular level, including activity (TNF)-α, (IFN)-γ and IL together with hemorheological and antifibrinolytic effects so one can hypothesize that PTX could be a potential treatment for TNF-α-mediated skin diseases, as it might be involved in the depigmentation process in vitiligo. Due to the limited studies using PTX for vitiligo, this study aimed to compare topical PTX and 5-FU in combination with NB-UVB phototherapy and microneedling for the treatment of vitiligo. |
