Abstract
Condensation of benzaldehyde and its p-methoxy and p-nitro derivatives with diethylmalonate followed by 1,4-addition of grignard reagents, gave the desired diethyl-1alkyl-2benzylmalonates II a-J. alkylation of II a-j with allyl bromide and cyclization of the obtained diethyl -1alkyl-2benzylmalonates III a-j afforded the desired diesters IV a-j.
