Abstract A large number of bacterial strains were isolated from soil, horse manure and compost. The isolates were tested for the ability to degrade xylan by growing in Sorensen solid agar medium. The primary selection of the isolates was carried out by the detection of the clear zone around and under the growing organisms and confirmation by staining with congo red stain. Twenty thermophilic actinomycetes showed sharp clear zone. Ten of the isolated thermophilic streptomycetes that have the ability to utilise xylan as carbon source were characterised and identified as follows: Streptomyces thermodiastaticus (two isolates), Streptomyces thermoviolaceus, Streptomyces themovulgaris (two isolates), Streptomyces thermonitrificans (two isolates), Streptomyces thermolacalitolernas, Streptomyces sp. K37 and Streptomyces NAR85. |
