Abstract Helicobacter pylori, a gram - negative spiral shaped bacterium, is one of the most prevalent pathogens in humans worldwide, causing infection of >50% of adults in developed countries. There is now general agreement that, Helicobacter pylori is the cause of chronic superficial (Type B) gastritis and is strongly associated with the majority of cases of peptic ulceration. Colonization of the gastric mucosa by Helicobacter pylori results in a chronic infection that rarely resolves itself and is difficult to eradicate by a single antimicrobial agent. |
