Abstract

The study area covers a part of the Western Desert of Egypt, it lies close the western side of the Nile Valley, between latitudes 26° 20’ & 27° 00’ north and longitudes 30° 40’ & 31° 20’ East. The area is mostly occupied by a thick limestone plateau of Eocene age. However, the older sedimentary sequences are found in the subsurface while some of which are exposed at the plateau scarps, which are predominating around the Nile Valley. The late Mesozoic - Early Cenozoic rocks which make the primary sedimentary section within the area under investigation, are subdivided into a number of mappable lithostratigraphic units; (i) the Jurassic - Campanian sequence, predominantly of continental facies with marine intercalation, and (ii) the Campanian - Lower Eocene, transgrressive - regressive open marine sequence.
