Abstract

Calculation of breakdown voltages for electron gative gases SF6, C12 CP2 were done assuming Townsend mechanism and then compared with the measured values. The percentage error was than calculated. It was found that for uniform field, for Sf6, and up to a pressure 10 atmosphere and a gap length of one mm, the error between calculated and measured breakdown voltage 1s about 1%. For c12 cF2, and uniform field and a pressure up to 15 atmosphere and gap length of one mm, the error between calculated and measured breakdown voltage is about 1% when Townsend mechanism is used to calculate the breakdown voltage of air, it gives less error than that for electronegative gases. Townsend mechanism was also used to calculate the breakdown voltages of electronegative gases under quasi uniform field. For SF6, the maximum error between calculated and measured breakdown voltage 1s about 11%, up to a pressure of 4 atmosphere and gap length of 5mm, sphere diameter of 5cm. Increasing the gap length to 10mm will increase the error for the same pressure to 15%. For c12 Cf2 the maximum error between calculated and measured breakdown voltages. between spherical electrodes of 5 cm diameter.
