Abstract

The present study was designed to evaluate the use of MRI in the diagnosis and treatment planning of oral cysts and tumors.
Thirty patients were involved, they were 17 males, with an age range 19-72 Yrs and 13 females, with an age range 16-70 Yrs.
In every patient, the particular lesion was, radiographically examined with dental radiography, panoramic radiography, conventional radiography, CT and MRI.
In those patients, lesions detected were three cases of dentigerous cyst, one case of nasopalatine duct cyst, six cases of inflammatory cyst, five cases of ameloblastoma, two cases of fibromyxoma, three cases of peripheral giant cell granuloma, one case of central giant cell granuloma, two cases of fibrous dysplasia, two cases of hemangioma, three cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue, one case of squamous cell carcinoma of the floor of the mouth and one case of squamous cell carcinoma of the alveolar mucosa.
The parameters used for comparison between MRI, plain radiography and CT were, lesion detection (artifact degradation and conspicuity).
For omparing MRI and CT, margins, bone involvement and soft tissue extension*‘ere the parameters used for comparison.
from the results, it was found that MRI was superior to plain radiography and CT in lesion detection. Also, as regards margins and soft :ssue extent of the disease MRI was found to be superior to CT.
However, CT was better than MRI in assessment of cortical bone involvement of the articuIar lesion.
