Abstract

A number of methods exist for the calculation of raft foundations in which several assumptions are made with regard to the structure and the subsoil. The simplest and least exact method is the method of rectilinear contact pressure distribution and the oldest method for calculating elastic foundation is the modulus of subgrade reaction - method (Winkler 1867). These methods are still used in design of raft foundations. Although these methods gives results far from the actual values for bending moments and contact pressure distributions under rafts and also the superstructure rigidity is neglected when design the rafts.
In recent years, much research work has been directed to the interaction analysis of soil - foundation problems. In fact, a realistic, safe and economic design can only be obtained if t he actual contact pressure between the foundation and the supporting soil is known. The supporting Boil, the foundation and the superstructure form one single unit and should therefore always be considered as a whole. Although the interaction problem between them is very complicated, it is important to take into consideration the interaction from the very start of any study.
