Abstract This study was in vivo and in vitro investigation of the effect of different reinforcing materials on the porosity of heatcured acrylic resin denture and growth of Candida albicans. The clinical procedures of the in vivo study were carried out on ten completely edentulous healthy male patients. Each patient received one conventional and three duplicate maxillary dentures against mandibular complete dentures. According to the incorporation of the reinforcement materials, the maxillary dentures were classified as follows: Group 1 (control group): maxillary dentures without any reinforcement material. Group 2: Maxillary dentures reinforced with carbon fibers. Group 3: Maxillary dentures reinforced with glass fibers. Group 4: maxillary dentures reinforced with polyethylene fibers. After finishing and polishing, the maxillary dentures were cleaned with running water and dried with oil free air spray. Then half of the fitting surface was glazed before insertion into the patient?s mouth. The triangular palatal area in contact with the glazed and nonglazed halves of the fitting surface were swabbed and examined for candidal growth weekly for six weeks with one week rest interval between each group. |
