Abstract

This work was carried out at the international livestock management training center, sakha, Egypt, to investigate the effect of season of the year on different physical characteristics of buffalo and friesian semen, also, spcrm motility percentages and different categories of acrosome integrity of spennatozoa of buffalo and friesian bulls were studied in semen supplemented with different levels of caffeine or heparin (0, 10 and 20 µg/ml) and stored at different storage times (0, 24, 48 and 72 h) at room or cooling (5°c) temperature.
The obtained results may be summarized as follows:
1. overall mean of ejaculate volume, percentages of mass sperm motility and abnormality of spermatozoa, and total sperm out put/ejaculate were significantly (p<o.o1) higher in friesian than buffalo bulls (3.5 ml, 61.1%, 2.7% and 7.l x10^9 vs, 5.1 ml, 65.3%, 2.4% and 3.5x10^9, respectively).
2. The highest ejaculate volume, percentage of sperm motility and total sperm out put/ejaculate and the lowest percentage of sperm abnormality
were found during spring in buffalo and friesian semen (2.6 ml, 66.2%,
4.6x 10^9 and 1.9%, and 5.7 ml, 68.2%, 8.5x 10^9 and 2.6%, respectively),
3. The highest ejaculate volume and sperm motility percentage occurred
during march and april in both species, however, total sperm out put/ejaculate was found during june in buffalo and in april in friesian
bulls. While, the lowest percentage of sperm abnormality was observed
during april in buffalo and in september in friesian semen
