Abstract

The work in this thesis is focused on the geometry, redox properties, nature, kinetics and mechanism of the electrode couples of HAN, it Schiff bases and hydrazones and their metal chelates in solution and in solid states employing elemental, thermal analyses, spectroscopic and voltammetric techniques. Hence, the overall work in this thesis can be summarized as follows: 1. In chapter one, we present a brief review on the preparation and characterization of some metal complexes of a series of acetonaphthone, Schiff bases, and hydrazones. Our literature survey revealed that few studies of HANsalicoyl hydrazone and its Schiff bases with some amino acid are known. 2. Chapter two includes the determination of the stability constant of HAN with some transition and lanthanides metal chelates in solution using pHmetric titration and spectrophotometic methods. A series of solid mono and binuclear metal complexes are also prepared and fully characterized by thermal and elemental analyses, IR, NMR, techniques. 3. In chapter three, we present the preparation, characterization and the determination of the dissociation (pka) and the overall stability constants ( ) of a series of Schiff bases containing 1hydroxy2acetonaphthone and aniline, 2 aminopyridine or their amino derivatives and their complexes in solution. The geometries of the solid metal chelates of Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Pd2+, MoO22+ and UO22+ ions are also determined. 4. Chapter four covers the preparation and spectroscopic characterization of a series of aroylhydrazones containing 1hydroxy2acetonaphthone. The geometries of the isolated solid metal chelates of these reagents are determined from their elemental analyses; IR, UVvis, NMR. 5. Chapter five is concerned with the redox behaviour of HAN, its Schiff bases and hydrazones and their UO22+, MoO22+, Ru3+ and Pd2+ chelates in DMFTBA+PF6. The nature, kinetics and mechanism of the electrode couples of each metal chelate are addressed and assigned properly. The stability of HAN and some of its Schiff bases and their UO22+, MoO22+, Ru3+ and Pd2+ complexes towards oxidation are related to the Hammet?s parameters, electron withdrawing or releasing ability of the substituent in the phenyl of the amine substituent.
