Abstract

In the last decades, the swimmers had complained from jellyfish that found in the coastal Egyptian waters The sample was collected on July 1, 2002 from AL­Arish summer resort, North of Sinai governorate, Egypt. Immediately, after capture, tentacles were cut off from the alive jellyfish, Aurelia aurita, and DROPped in a glass jar which cooled in an water ice tank till arrival to laboratory of Biochemistry Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Mansoura University, Mansoura, Egypt. The jellyfish, Aurelia aurita, tentacles sample were homogenized and extracted by 30%, 60%, and 80% ammonium sulfate (ppt1, ppt2 and ppt3 respectively); totally 80% ammonium sulfate; and totally 80% acetone. These whole protein fractions were treated biologically on brine shrimp, red blood cells, granary weevils, rats and mice, and fungus (Rhizoctonia solani). The exuded venom was applied on the author legs. The protein fractions were toxic and lethal to brine shrimp, red blood cells and to the fungus. Chemically, the protein fractions were studied for gel filtration, ion­exchange chromatography, carbohydrate content, isoelectric point (PI), ionic strength, amino acid composition and electrophoresis. Electrophoresis was carried out in comparison between the body and tentacles protein fractions under the same conditions.
