Abstract

The main purpose of this study is evaluation of the expanded polystyrene foam beads as a filtrating media in direct filtration mode under the Egyptian conditions. The main objective of this study were determining the hydraulic properties of the foam beads as a filtering media that controlling the operation characteristics of the foam beads as a filtering media. Determination the design criteria of the direct filtration mode using foam beads that produce filtrate turbidity less than 1.0 NTU through filter run length not less than 8.0 hr with head loss less than 0.80 m. The experimental work was planed to be in three phases. The first phase was designated to study the hydraulic properties of the foam media. The second phase was designated to study, using synthetic turbid water, the operation properties and the behavior of the foam beads as a filtrating media. The results of first and second phases were used to design a floating media filter to purify the natural surface water. The third phase was the field study to optimizing the designed foam beads media under the natural conditions. For this study a pilot plant was constructed. The design of the pilot plant allowed the measuring of the monitored variables such as the turbidity and head loss through the different depths of filter media. The pilot plant was installed firstly at the laboratory of sanitary engineering in the faculty of engineeringElMansoura University. After that the pilot plant was located at the water treatment plant of Meet Faris village witch withdraw its raw water from ?Baher Tanah? a main canal driven from Nile River Damiatta Branch. Using the expanded polystyrene foam media as a filtration media reduce the capital cost in comparison to the rapid sand filter by about 39.25 %, and reduce the operation cost by about 6.19 %. Using the expanded polystyrene foam media as a filtration media reduce the required volume of water for washing by 90 %. And reduce the time of washing to 23 min.
