Abstract

The present work provides a detailed ecopalynological study of the plant life in the River Nile system in Egypt. Eighty stands were selected in the study area to represent various water ways, namely: drainage and irrigation canals, northern lakes (Manzala, Borollus and Idku), Damietta Branch, Rosetta Branch and main stream of the River Nile southward till BeniSweif. The present study aims at the following objectives: 1 Recognition of the major water bodies of the aquatic habitats associated with the River Nile system in Egypt. 2 Investigation of the floristic features, including distribution of the recorded plant species, lifespan, lifeform spectra and floristic analysis of the plant life in the study area. 3 Analysis of vegetation by using multivariate techniques of classification and ordination to recognize the plant communities prevailing in the study area. 4 Analysis of variation in sediment (hydrosoil) and water factors and ascertain the degree of correlation between these variables. 5 Study the morphology of some water plants, and their different ways of reproduction with special reference to the description of their pollen grains. 6 Construction of key slides for the pollen grains of the water plants fortified with accurate description and photos. 7 Investigation of fossil pollen grains of deep profiles in order to reconstruct the history of the past vegetation and habit.
